HAMMER THE (DVD MOVIE)

Amazon.com
No, The Hammer is not the Fred Williamson story, but a surprisingly satisfying underdog sports movie and date movie; an unlikely genre combination, but The Hammer nails it. Adam Carolla, former co-host of The Man Show, stars as underachiever Jerry, just turned 40. A former Golden Gloves boxer (as was Carolla), he works as a construction worker/handyman and also teaches the sweet science at the local gym. You know the drill: Jerry gets fired after running afoul of his abusive boss; Jerry loses fed-up girlfriend; Jerry meets Lindsay (Heather Jurgensen), an idealistic public defender; Jerry impresses a coach and gets the chance to try out for the Olympic boxing team. But a deft touch makes The Hammer a contender. This is Carolla's first bout with leading man status, and, happily, he has the director of the "I Kissed a Girl" arthouse hit, Kissing Jessica Stein in his corner. The script makes effective use of Carolla's unpretentious screen presence, giving him ample opportunity to punch out some droll comic riffs while he pursues his second chance in the ring as well as Lindsay. Add to the mix a grudging friendship he develops with a cocky boxer whom the coach is grooming. The Hammer may not technically be a knockout, but it does go the distance. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars The Hammer, Adam Carolla   September 17, 2008
Laura K. Provencher (Fairfield, CA)
My husband and I went and saw it at the Theater and loved it, so I bought him the DVD. I removed the jacket and sent it to Adam Carolla at his radio station and with a SASE he autographed it and sent it back. Now I have a GREAT stocking stuffer for my husband. VERY COOL! Thanks Adam!

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as advertised   September 15, 2008
Joseph A. Gustafson (Minneapolis, MN USA)
Adam Corolla really hyped this movie during his appearance on the Bill Simmons podcast on ESPN.com. I also see that many reviewers seem to have loved this movie. But I don't really get it. I'm a big Corolla fan and some of his subtle/dry humour is hilarous during this movie, but overall this is a below-average (and unoriginal) Hollywood filem.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie for couples   September 12, 2008
Scott Olson
So here comes a little movie from the guy who used to host "The Man Show," and is now one of the hottest morning show personalities on the west coast. This movie was much better than I had expected, and I'm a self described fan of Adam Carolla's work. This is a movie that is filled with heart and comedy. A surprisingly engaging romance along with some laugh out loud moments make this one movie that will leave you smiling from start to finish. I recommend it, if even for the fact of rewarding Carolla for taking a risk and creating something that can be genuinely enjoyable for guys and girls alike.

5 out of 5 stars Love Adam, doubted the movie... then I loved it when I watched it   September 5, 2008
Hugh's the man (O.C., Cali)
Adam Carolla is my favorite radio personality. If you don't get his show on the radio in your home town, then go find a webcast or podcast of it. Its well worth checking out.

This movie had me laughing all the way through. His attitude and comedic style rang right through his character just like it does on his show every morning. Thanks, Adam, for keeping it real.

I'm ordering my own copy right now. I hope you finally made some money off of this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Very good movie   September 5, 2008
Woody Smith (Las Vegas)
Boy have I seen a lot of crap at the movies. The Hammer, is a movie I am finally glad to watch. Very good story, believable plot, and oh yeah, it was funny. The director's commentary is very funny and worth a second viewing.
