Amazon.com essential video A phenomenal hit when it was released in 1989, Field of Dreams has become a modern classic and a uniquely American slice of cinema. It functions effectively as a moving drama about the power of dreams, a fantasy ode to our national pastime, and a brilliant adaptation of W.P. Kinsella's exquisite baseball novel Shoeless Joe. Kinsella himself found the film a delightful surprise, differing greatly from his novel but benefiting from its own creative variations. It is the film that cemented Kevin Costner's status as an all-American screen star, but the story resonates far beyond Costner's handsome appeal. As just about everyone knows by now, Costner stars as Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, who hears the mysterious words "If you build it, he will come," and is compelled to build a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. His wife (Amy Madigan) supports the wild idea, but a reclusive novelist (modeled after J.D. Salinger and played by James Earl Jones) is not so easily persuaded. The idealistic farmer is either a visionary or a deluded fool, but his persistence is rewarded when spirits from baseball's past begin appearing on the ball field. Past and present intermingle in the person of "Moonlight Graham" (superbly played by Burt Lancaster), an unknown player who sacrificed his dreams of baseball glory for a dignified life as a small-town physician ... but what all of this means is unclear until the film's memorably heartfelt conclusion. A meditation on family, memory, and faith, the film balances humor and magic to strike just the right chord of thoughtful emotion, affecting audiences so deeply that the baseball field created for the production has now become a mecca of sorts for dreamers around the world. --Jeff Shannon

Exposing new generations to a Wonderful movie! August 30, 2010 phorak This is a great movie! Kevin Costner is awesome in this film. I have always enjoyed this story and now I have passed it down to two younger generations to enjoy.
Field of Dreams, a timeless, sports classic. July 28, 2010 Nick France (Florida, USA) Field of Dreams is a timeless, sports classic, especially if you love the game of baseball. It's also a very well written story about dreams and pursuing them at all costs. Each character has a dream and we not only get a glimpse, we get to see the reason they have them and in some cases we even get to see them come true. This is a great family movie and one you'll love to own. Field of Dreams (Widescreen Two-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Classic July 4, 2010 Michael Carney I first watched this movie when it came out and enjoyed it from the beginning. Recently, we purchased the DVD and I watched it with my 13 year old daughter who is no fan of baseball. She sat enthralled with the movie which really surprised me. Yes, maybe it is not the most believable story line, but I believe that is what makes this movie so interesting. I am not a Kevin Costner fan, but he did a great job portraying himself as an average guy living in Iowa. The acting overall is great and I loved how the story flowed! Overall, I like that the movie did not spell out for you what happened, particularly the end. It was for each individual in the audience to speculate as to how to story continued. Classic film!
Excellent service. June 24, 2010 sofia Amazon was the only place where I could find this anniversary edition in full screen. It arrived promptly and in new condition, as promised.
You cannot miss this movie, it will touch your heart May 19, 2010 Victor Sergio Meniz-quincho (Seattle, Wa) Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you took the road less traveled? This movie reminds me so much of how baseball, an American pasttime, used to be with passion and not about money, that many had to leave it all behind to do other things, but died, wishing to finish the game, or died under other circumstances. James Earl Jones is amazing, and so is the unforgettable Ray Liotta. The most touching part is Kevin Costner seeing his father again after his father died. "If you build it, he will come," a voice says to Kevin in the beginning in his farm corn field. He wants to discover who will come. Not really a spiritual movie, but it makes you have faith in God, if God tells you to do the rediculous, he will do the miraculous. Never Settle for anything less and make no regrets.
