Only ball I can honestly play with February 11, 2010 R. A. Bryant (Taylors, SC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
12 years ago. 18 years old. Joined a gym that had a court. Never played much indoors up until this point so I just went through the balls they had to find which one I would like best. The ball I found had a deep brown color to it so I didn't know what brand ball it was. But it was the best ball of all time. I make so many of my shots with it. Dribbles great. Handles great. Have to lick my fingers for some tackiness and grip though, but no big deal. Actually liked it that way. I move away. I go back 12 years later. Ball is still there. STILL in good shape and GREAT to play with. I later find out that it is this ball. Well, I move away again. I seriously entertain the notion of stealing the ball for myself I love it this much. But I don't. I bought a new one on here. At first I was concerned about break in and stuff because after all, I had played with a well worn ball. And others expressed the need for this as well. I got it in the mail and it was a tad shiny like some coating was on it. A little nervous about it. I got some leather lotion to polish it and clean it. Did that a few times before I got to the gym. And I have to be honest. After shooting with this freaking AWESOME ball, I think I may like it just as much if not more than the one at old gym. Absolutely fantastic. I love to shoot and this ball seriously works for me. I love the way it feels on my hands, the sound it makes with that swish, the dribble, everything. I do know though and always noticed only a few played with the ball at old gym so I don't believe it is for everyone. But I can say I am very happy myself, all I want to do is shoot around for hours on in. THANK YOU Spalding!
Real Leather Basketball December 5, 2009 Deal Finder (Northern Virginia) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great high quality basketball. Since it has a real leather cover it is strictly for indoor use. I own 8 basketballs from various manufacturers including Nike, Wilson, and Belden and this one is by far my favorite. My second favorite is the Wilson Jet game balls. I bought if on sale for $68 and am extremely satisfied.
How to break-in the official NBA game ball July 28, 2009 R. Taylor (san diego , ca.) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
After months and months of deliberation, I finally decided to purchase a Spalding NBA Official Game Basketball. While the basketball was on its way being delivered to my home, I google searched on ways to break-in the ball. I even called Spalding in the ATL to get advice. I was told by Splading, "that you just have to dribble and shoot with the ball. NBA teams usually take up to nine months to break-in a ball before it can be considered for a game." Well nine months I don't have. So this is what I did:
When I received my NBA basketball via UPS, it felt like a balloon ball and over inflated. I know the writing on the ball states to fill 7 - 9lbs of air pressure. Well when you first get the ball you can't do that or you will hate it.(i.e. other reviews of the balloon effect). So this is what I did.... I took air out of the ball. I took it down to about 4.5 - 5lbs of air pressure. Now granted the ball will dribble flat, BUT, because it is leather, the ball will shrink and form around its new air pressure. So as you shoot and dribble the ball, it reduces the balloon look and feel and shrinks and forms to a real basketball or "pill". Once the break-in period is done(and you'll know when) just add about 1lbs. of air pressure to where the leather will tighten and stretch just a little but not too much.........
And there you have it an NBA "pill"
This ball is worth the money! May 29, 2009 Chris (Central California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I finally made the plunge and purchased the official NBA ball, I wasn't sure what to expect. Now that I have been playing with it for a few months, the responsiveness, forgiveness around the rim and overall feel is worth the $$$$. My biggest concern before I made this purchase was the break in period, how to break it in effectively and timely. I read many reviews, but then determined to break this thing in like a saddle, which also takes time and effort to break in. I used saddle soap right out of the box, then every time before shooting around, would wet the ball with a little water, creating a nice tacky surface. Repeat the saddle soap at least once every two weeks and wet your hands before every practice session. It still takes several months to fully break it in, but this definitely quickens up the process. Good luck and enjoy!
